North Pacific Groundfish Observer Program

In September 2012 A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) was awarded a contract by NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to provide fishery observer services to the Alaska Fisheries Science Center’s Fisheries Monitoring and Analysis Division as part of the 2013 restructuring plan for the partial coverage fleet. In April 2013 AIS was awarded a five-year follow on contract to continue providing observer support services.  Through the performance of these contracts AIS places observers on commercial fishing vessels operating in the Gulf of Alaska and the Bering Sea to safely collect and deliver high quality data to NMFS.

Observers are deployed on commercial fishing vessels ranging in size from 40 feet to 125 feet in length. The vessels covered in this program utilize hook and line, trawl and pot gear to target groundfish during trips lasting 2 to 10 days in duration.

In order to provide NMFS with the most qualified candidates AIS fills openings with experienced observers and throughout the year actively recruits professional biologists for entry into the program. Please see our list of current job openings to apply.
